Cajuns Bats Stay Hot In Sweep

The Cajuns explosive offense continued in the series final Sunday, scoring 16 runs to sweep UALR. The 16-6 win was the third straight game Louisiana has posted 14 hits and the 16 runs were a season high in runs.

The Cajuns also now have a winning record at “The Tigue” for the first time this year, now 6-5-1 at Moore Field. The three-game sweep is the Cajuns’ first of the season, as well as the first Sun Belt weekend series win of 2009.

Greg Wilborn was near-spotless through six innings, and only ran into much trouble just before leaving the game in the seventh. In 6 2/3 innings, he allowed five runs, all earned, through three were still on base when he left. Wilborn struck out 10 batters, an individual high on the season, as part of a 12 strikeout effort, the best combined total for the staff so far.

The Ragin’ Cajuns put together one of their finest offensive outings of the year, with 14 hits, 12 RBI, five extra base hits including two home runs and two triples, seven walks and just one strikeout. The lone K is the Cajuns’ best figure of the season, beating the previous best of three set on March 8 at Arkansas State. Louisiana had previously struck out at least six times in every game in which they posted 10 or more hits.

After this weekend, six Cajuns are now hitting at least .300, whereas prior to the series just two batters were at that level or above. Three more are hitting above .270.

Sunday’s win also represents the fourth time the Cajuns have had more runs than hits, benefitting from four Trojans’ errors, which were responsible for three runs.

Les Smith continues to post excellent numbers, Sunday striking for his third home run of the weekend, now a three-game home run streak, as well as a double. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Smith now has a team-leading 20 RBI and this weekend cracked the .300 batting average mark.

Chad Keefer returned to early-season form with a 2-for-5 day, driving in a game-best four runs with an RBI single and a three-run home run, the first of his NCAA Division I career. Kyle Olasin went 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Greg Fontenot could not be put out during his 4-for-5 outing at the plate, becoming an invaluable base runner and scoring four runs on the day. Thad Griffen also drove in a run on 1-for-2 hitting with three walks.
